About Us

In the beginning

We’re all about having fun. Life is far too short to take it seriously all the time. Flip through the pages of almost any surf, skate, bike, whatever magazine these days and you’ll find companies and brands killing themselves to prove how cool they are. Trying all the time to prove how cool you are sounds too much like hard work to us. So, rather than try to prove how cool we are to you, we’re just gonna have a bit of fun with Little Green Rock.

We’re not opposed to a bit of work; we just think that work is better left for rainy days. Lucky enough to live on the sun and surf rich island of Jersey, we really wanted the freedom to go for a surf when there were waves, take the mountain bikes to the trails when the sun was out, squeeze in a bit of free diving and spear fishing when the conditions were right or just hang out on the beach and put the world right.

After tossing the idea of a t-shirt company around for a couple of years, we finally decided to give it a go in the autumn of 2006.  As with anyone who spends a great deal of time outdoors, we had always been against anything that screwed up our oceans or any other part of this little green rock that we called home. With this in mind, we decided to run the company as environmentally friendly as possible from the outset.  Not long after starting Little Green Rock, we decided that we neither wanted to be referred to as a t-shirt company or, worse, a ’lifestyle brand’. We started throwing around ideas for other clothes and actually came up with a few really good ideas. Always wanting an excuse for a new surfboard, we thought we’d have a go at making a board more eco friendly by using bamboo and epoxy. We even came up with a couple of designs for bamboo skateboards and a bamboo balance board. This was starting to feel like a proper company now!

It was then that we really scored. We found a new, upstart clothing manufacturer that also shared our eco-ethos. The head honcho for design and production managing was a godsend. He was a skater and had even worked with bamboo fabrics before. Finally, we had found someone who wanted to work with us and was as excited about what we were doing as we were. Plus, now at least somebody actually knew what the hell they were doing. What was originally supposed to be a few t-shirts had evolved into a production run of an entire clothing line. We somehow managed to scrape together enough money through credit cards, borrowing, selling, blackmail and one possible case of alcohol induced prostitution to have our ideas, sketches and artwork turned into actual pieces of clothing.

Where to go from here?

We are really proud of the clothes that we have come up with and our surf and skateboards are evolving all the time. We are also proud to say that we have managed to balance sustainability and profitability. We could have had much bigger profit margins by using more conventional fabrics, materials and methods, but there’s a whole lot more to life than money. If you have read down this far, let me say ’thank you’ for showing an interest in us.  We hope that you like what we have come up with. We are by no means done; even as the first production run was underway, we were working on the next designs. As our company history gets longer, so will this page.
